Alyson & Darren’s Story
Alyson and Darren always knew they wanted children. However, growing their family from idea to reality proved to be more challenging than they first anticipated. They already had an amazing little boy as they embarked upon what would be a five-year journey to have another child. A little over five years after they started trying, a double surprise of twin daughters were born in May 2018, making their growing family complete.
Having several embryos remaining, embryo donation had always been something they had talked about. Darren and Alyson shared an understanding of how fortunate they had been. They wanted to give their embryos a chance at life, and hopefully, to help another family who struggled with infertility.
The Challenge
It was a hard journey to find a family for their embabies, and Alyson was starting to think it might not happen. Then, unexpectedly, an intended parent in Montana desiring donated embryos reached out to Alyson through an embryo donation website. Alyson and Kelly, the prospective new mother, immediately connected over their struggles with infertility and the strong desire to have another child.
Without much knowledge of the embryo donation process, especially since Alyson and Darren live in Canada and the recipients live in Montana, they embarked into the literal unknown. Alyson reached out to a Vancouver family lawyer in her area, who later recommended that the contract should be reviewed by an attorney in Montana, referring them directly to Katharine.
The Solution
Initially, the legal portion of an embryo donation contract felt overwhelming for the couple, as it is a fairly new area of law.
